Fans react to Simon Cowell leaving ‘American Idol

January 12th, 2010 by — Within minutes of the news that Simon Cowell is leaving “American Idol” after the season that begins Tuesday, the Internet was abuzz with fan reactions and more than a few conspiracy theories.

Twitter was the place for more cynical “Idol” watchers to air their views, and more than a few seemed ready for “Idol” to fall.

“simon cowell leaving american idol wow this should be the last season,” wrote LONDIE032, while jo420 Tweeted “just voted “No” on “Will you watch American Idol once Simon leaves.”

Others seemed ready to embrace Cowell’s move from “Idol” to “The X-Factor,” a similar talent competition that’s an enormous hit in the U.K., where Cowell already serves the lead judge.

He said in Monday’s announcement that he will getting his mean face on as a judge for the new American version of the show, set to roll out next year.

Avaloi_victoria Tweeted “simon is trying to bring X factor to Fox Network. YESSSS! X Factor is waaayyy better than american idol.”

Others took that part of the news as at least some small consolation.

“The only saving grace is that we’ll still see him on another Fox program in the near future,” RoseMcB wrote on the “American Idol” official fan comment boards.

Posters on the “Idol” Web site, predictably, expressed more outright sadness – even despair – over the impending end of the Cowell era.

“All the thrill of the new season has been robbed from me. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING!,” wrote Crackin Rosie.

On Twitter, commenters were more likely to be disdainful of the whole kafuffle, posting sentiments like “simon cowell to leave American Idol, and biggest news flash: I still don’t care,” as mindtonic wrote.

A number of Twitter posters, not content to keep their musings strictly on topic, saw fit to wrap in other major TV news of the day – namely, Sarah Palin’s new role as a pundit on Fox News, and the continuing mystery about whether Conan O’Brien will remain in NBC’s late-night line-up when Jay Leno reclaims his former 11:35 p.m. spot.

Twitterer nickrkey quipped, “sarah palin is the new judge on american idol? and simon cowell will be the new governor of alaska? what a crazy day.”
