Hear the Song: Remember the Heros

The Tampa Bay Lighting announced Saturday that proceeds from a charity hockey game to be held at Fan Fest next week will benefit a memorial fund for Tampa Police Cpl Mike Roberts, who died Wednesday.

Roberts was shot and killed during a confrontation with a homeless man, Humberto Delgado, police say. Roberts, who received 33 commendations as a police officer, leaves a wife and 3-year-old son.

The game, which will feature Lightning players Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, Mattias Ohlund, Victor Hedman, Matt Walker, Andrej Meszaros and Adam Hall, will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Aug. 29. Friends of Roberts also will play in the game.

An auction of players’ jerseys and memorabilia and direct donations made during Fan Fest also will feed the memorial fund.

Lightning Fan Fest 2009 is from 3 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at the St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa, and is free to the public. The event features youth clinics, fan activities, public skating, the first chance for fans to purchase single game tickets, food and drink discounts and more.

Great song for such an awful situation. Thank you guys for bringing light to such a horrible situation yet keeping it relevant. Keep up the good work and keep it fun. If you can’t have fun and a laugh doing it its probably not worth it.

Thank you Bubba for covering this story, and thank you Manson for compiling this tribute to Corporal Roberts. My prayers go out to the family he left behind and to all the men and women of the Tampa PD on the lose of an outstanding officer and a father. He died a HERO, and will be remembered as such.

Great song and thank you Bubba for the coverage. I have many friends who are police officers so this hits close to home. Now there will people who want bans on guns. Just remember that guns do NOT kill it is the asshole shooting the gun that does the killing. My thoughts and prayers go out to CPL Roberts.

I am Mike’s one and only Brother, Paul Roberts. My family and I are still tortured by this senseless act. For everyone reading this, please pray for Mike’s soul and for all law enforcement who selflessly provide the security and safety that enables us to live our lives.

God Bless you soul, Mike…I love you.
