Ex-Officer Admits Molesting Children

PALATKA, Fla. – A former Crescent City police officer has told a judge that he’s a pedophile who has molested hundreds of children.
Paul Blair was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in state prison for two counts of sexual battery on a minor. The 25-year sentences on each count will run concurrently.
The 60-year-old pleaded guilty Tuesday and told the judge that he has been a pedophile most of his life and has molested 200-300 girls. Prosecutors said there was no evidence to support that claim.
On Feb. 18, Blair pleaded no contest to two counts of sexual battery of a minor. The plea agreement he reached with prosecutors called for a 30-year prison sentence.
Blair was arrested in May on two counts of sexual assault on a minor, two counts of lewd and lascivious molesting and obstruction of justice.
One victim said Blair had been touching and sexually molesting her for years, according to an Putnam County Sheriff’s Office arrest report. She said Blair had her perform oral sex on him on one occasion, according to the report.
“(Blair) would tell her he loves her, but he loves her in the wrong way,” the report reads. “She would ask him to stop, and she said he would for a while, but then he would start touching her again.”
One of the victims said the last time Blair touched her was in April. She said they were watching TV, and he put his hand down her pants and stuck his fingers in her vagina, according to the report. She said the abuse began when she was about 4 or 5 years old, and it would happen several times a week for at least the last 10 years, according to the report.
Blair apologized in court to both victims. He told the judge part of the reason he pleaded guilty is because he has an unspecified life-threatening medical condition for which he’s refusing treatment.
“Ashamed is probably a good word,” Paul Blair’s son, Robert Blair, said of what he felt about his father’s admitted actions. “Disgusted is another good word, too, but he’s still my father, and so that’s kind of hard to deal with, too.”
Blair’s family said they knew there were a few victims, but they said they were stunned at his sentencing hearing when he said there were hundreds.
“When he admitted to molesting over 100 children, it was a heck of a shock. It’s terrible, terrible,” Paul Blair’s father-in-law, David Main, said.
Before the confession, family members stood up to give impact statements. Blair’s son believes his statement may have led to his father’s dramatic confession.
“I looked him in the eye and told him I wanted him to do what he taught me, which was stand on his own two feet, be a man and tell the truth,” Robert Blair said.
The family said they can now move on knowing the former officer is off the streets and in prison for what could be the rest of his life.
“That’s what is most important is that he can’t hurt anybody else,” Robert Blair said. “He’s put our family through a lot, and now we’re all united and back together again.”
Paul Blair was charged with similar crimes about 20 years ago in Polk County, but they were dropped.
