Dontae Morris pleads not guilty, will face death penalty

TAMPA – The state will seek the death penalty for Dontae Morris in the deaths of two Tampa police officers.

Morris pleaded not guilty today to the four first-degree murder charges he faces. He is accused of fatally shooting Tampa police officers Dave Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab on June 29 after a traffic stop. He also is accused of killing Derek Anderson and Harold Wright in separate, unrelated incidents.

All the killings occurred since April, when Morris was released from prison. He had been serving two years for drug and probation-violation charges.

The widows of Curtis and Kocab attended today’s arraignment. Sara Kocab, who gave birth to a stillborn baby Wednesday, was in a wheelchair. The baby had a congenital defect; the couple had known from early on in the pregnancy the baby, Lilly Nicole, was unlikely to survive.

Prosecutors said they plan to seek the death penalty only for the slayings of the two officers, not for the two other homicides with which Morris is charged.

Antoinette Colbert, the sister of Derek Anderson, said she had no problem with that.

“I don’t wish the death penalty on anyone,” Colbert said. “Life imprisonment is enough for me. He’s going to suffer being in court and in jail.”

The mother of two of Harold Wright’s children, though, was upset about the prosecutors’ decision.

“It’s not fair that he only gets the death penalty for the cops. Don’t the two other men matter?” said Matisse Gallman.

What a little bitch. He was a bad ass playa when he popped a cap in the cops but now that he’s hemmed up on murder charges facing the death penalty he’s gonna plead not guilty. Guess he’s hoping his buddy Mark Ober will get him a pass on the charges, or bungle the case and get him a mistrial.
    The whole affair is sickening.
