TAMPA – Tampa police investigators searched Humberto Delgado Jr.’s storage unit for nearly five hours days after, police say, he shot and killed Corporal Mike Roberts.

Inside the Oldsmar storage unit on 4080 Tampa Road, detectives said they found a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle with scope and laser sight, bags of ammunition and several magazines associated with firearms.

Retired Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Detective Rod Reder says Tampa investigators will do a complete history on Delgado, leaving no chances for a surprise in the courtroom.

“Where he’s been, his history, they’ll have a thorough history on the guns, where he got them and how you may find other crimes were committed with these guns,” Reder said.

Newly released court documents show other items collected include a book called the “Shooter’s Bible”, a certificate for a firearms safety course, a veterans affairs I.D. card, a birth certificate and marriage license.

Reder says this search and the others being conducted are all part of an integrated investigative puzzle.

“Every time they open one door like the storage unit you open up new doors cause information you may find in there may lead them down different paths,” Reder said.

Investigators say Corporal Roberts spotted Delgado pushing a shopping cart on North Nebraska Ave in Tampa on August 19. The encounter quickly turned violent.

A brief chase and struggle ended police say with Delgado pulling out a gun, and fatally shooting Corporal Roberts.

A short time later, detectives say Delgado called his uncle and told him he had shot a cop and, “I think I killed him”.

Reder believes Delgado’s attorney will lay the ground work for an insanity defense, but Tampa police investigators
