RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A teenager is dead after the coroner says he shot his girlfriend and then himself outside a home daycare in northeast Richland County Tuesday morning.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Henry Ellison, 18, shot 21-year-old Kiara Smith several times during a dispute near the front porch of the home before turning the gun on himself.

A sheriff’s department spokesman said Smith was Ellison’s girlfriend, and also worked at the daycare which is owned by Ellison’s mother.

According to Captain Chris Cowan, Ellison’s mother took him to Shirley Tucker’s Day Care on Summit Ridge Drive around 9:45am. Ellison confronted Smith outside the house, and the argument turned violent.

Ellison was pronounced dead at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, according to Cowan. Smith was able to drive herself to Providence Northeast Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“There were children inside the home at the time,” said Cowan. “None of the children were hurt.”

Cowan said the children’s ages range from infants to 5-year-olds. “We had one deputy that was inside playing with the kids while we were processing the scene,” added Cowan.

Ellison did not have a criminal history, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

WIS has a crew on the scene, so look for details on as they emerge as well as full reports on WIS News 10 at 5, 6 and 7.
