CANASTOTA, N.Y. (AP) — State police say a 17-year-old boy shot and killed when he pointed a pellet gun at two officers had written a suicide message and staged the carjacking report that led to his death.
They say Justin Arnold, of Cazenovia, was in a relative’s car when he made the 911 call Thursday afternoon to report the vehicle had been taken by an armed man in the city of Sherrill, 28 miles east of Syracuse.
The car was spotted and pursued to a dead-end road, where police say Arnold got out and pointed what appeared to be black handgun at two approaching Canastota village police officers. The officers fired 10 shots, hitting him with four.
Investigators said Friday they found a suicide message on an electronic device he owned.
School officials tell the Oneida Dispatch that Arnold was homeschooled and taking writing and math classes at Morrisville State College.
