Collier deputies test new “Terminator Armor”

http://today.msnbc.msn.com– The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is testing out new body armor for its SWAT team members. It’s designed to withstand not only bullets, but bombs too.

The armor was designed to keep Collier County SWAT members alive in the line of fire. And Wednesday, we were there as it was put to the test.

The Kryron “Terminator Armor” plates, made by Borque Industries, will be worn over Kevlar vests.

Commander Bob Lewis, with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office says the Kevlar alone “doesn’t have ballistic capabilities we’re using here as far as multiple impacts. We see that so much now – multiple hits.”

The plates will shield up to 40 SWAT team members if they’re under fire in the field.

The armor can withstand short range shots. So in high stakes operations, the Terminator Armor could mean fewer lives lost.
The Kryron armor can also protect boats and planes from heavy fire – even explosives.

And while SWAT team members’ vests may not need protection that strong, the thick ceramic plates can be used to protect law enforcement boats.

“We want to have the best possible armor for these guys. Men and women need to be protected to the best of our abilities and this fits that bill,” said Commander Lewis.
