Coast Guard: Tar balls found off Key West

May 19th, 2010 by admin

KEY WEST – The U.S. Coast Guard says 20 tar balls have been found off Key West, Fla., but the agency stopped short of saying whether they came from a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Some 5 million gallons of crude has spewed into the Gulf and tar balls have been washing ashore in several states along the coast.

Scientists are worried that oil is getting caught in a major ocean current that could carry it through the Florida Keys and up the East Coast.

The tar balls have been sent to a lab for analysis, and the origin of them will not be known until that analysis is complete.

Dr. Ernst Peebles of the Marine Science Department at the University of South Florida tells FOX 13 that tar balls have long been present in the Gulf of Mexico from various sources.

Is this the same US Coast Guard that was asking reporters to leave the beach and cease their reporting as per “BP’s orders”.
When did BP start floating the payroll over at USCG?
And we are to believe this same USCG when they tell us the tar balls found in Key West are not from the spill.
