Child at day care bit, left disfigured

FALL RIVER, Mass., (WPRI) – The owners of a child day care center are charged with child endangerment after failing to provide medical help for two kids who were bitten by another.

That day care, Archangels Home Daycare is now shut down . Court documents shed new light on the shocking extent of the children’s injuries.

Court documents show the girl was repeatedly attacked by another child and investigators have confiscated blood-stained clothing from both children as evidence.

A 2-year-old was disfigured by another child at the home day care last week. The husband/wife day care providers, Mervat Heinen and Ashraf William were charged Friday with three counts including permitting substantial injury to a child.

According to court documents , the day care provider did little to protect the 2-year-old victim from the child that was biting her over and over again. The child was first bitten at 11 a.m. on the arm, then again at noon, then again an hour later. She was bitten several times to the face.

Shannon Furtado saw the girl when she picked up her son from daycare.

“It looked like a piece of her eyelid was missing. She had bite marks all over her face and all over her arms. It looked like she needed a lot of help to me,” Furtado said. “The daycare provider told me, ‘Her mom’s going to be very mad at me.’”

Furtado’s son was also bitten that day. When asked why she was not called, the daycare provider did not provide Furtado with an explanation.

“She said, ‘Oh, maybe next time I’ll call,’” Furtado said.

Investigators say the day care provider called the child’s guardian, her grandmother, and said the bites were minor, treating her with ice and band-aids. But it was clear to the grandmother when she was dropped off ten hours after the initial bite; the child needed immediate medical attention.

According to the documents a doctor who treated the child told police:

“She was just about covered head to toe with bite marks. The left eyelid was torn in half and was taped when she arrived at the emergency room, a disfiguring injury.”

The child was whisked off to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence for emergency surgery. There doctors told the grandmother, “She would have permanent disfigurement to her eye lid and her eye lashes would probably not grow back.”

The day care owners who were released on $1,000 cash bail. Documents state it was a seventeen-month-old girl who bit the victim, initially over a toy.

The child had recently been placed with family members because her mothers in prison.
