California kids blasted for wearing American flag shirts on Cinco de Mayo

May 7th, 2010 by —
A handful of California students got an unexpected lesson at their high school this week: Don’t wear your stars and stripes on Cinco de Mayo.

Five Morgan Hill, California students were asked to take off their American flag bandannas and turn their T-shirts inside out after students complained, according to NBC news in San Francisco.

Many members of Live Oak High School’s large Mexican-American student population that felt it was offensive for the students to wear the American flag on a day that’s supposed to celebrate Mexican heritage.

When the boys refused to take off their flag t-shirts and bandannas, they were ordered to go to the principal’s office.

“They said we could wear it on any other day,” Live Oak student Daniel Galli said, “but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it’s supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today.”

The alleged concern was that the T-shirts would lead to fights on campus.

“They said if we tried to go back to class with our shirts not taken off, they said it was defiance and we would get suspended,” said Dominic Maciel.

The chastised teens’ parents were furious.

“I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” Julie Fagerstrom, Maciel’s mom, said. “All they were doing was displaying their patriotic nature. They’re expressing their individuality.”

Morgan Hill Unified School District released a statement saying it does not agree with how Live Oak High School administrators handled this incident and that the boys would not be suspended.

But some students believe they are owed an apology.

“I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican heritage day,” Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, told NBC. “We don’t deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn’t do that on Fourth of July.”

Are you kidding me? Last time I checked we live in a free country, there are no laws saying that people can’t show patriotism just because it is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage! Our American troops are fighting every day to keep this country free! Shame on these students who were “offended” by our countries flag! If you don’t like this country then maybe you should leave!

So many things that I could say here, none of them very nice…. I suppose that the tamest thing that I can say is that this is what happens when you pucker up for the rump of every cultural identity except American…. Although if I paraded around with German paraphernalia, despite the fact that I am of German heritage and German was my first language, I would be lumped in with hate-groups… I suppose that your access to free speech and “civil rights” and special treatment is directly proportionate to your ability to get a tan… We apparently are supposed to be more sensitive to those who are at lower risk of getting skin cancer. I know that this makes not a lick of sense, but it wasn’t supposed to. The entire situation is stupid.

you have got to be freakin kidding me. See this is what happens when u start to cater to one immigrant population over others. You put a few government forms in English and Spanish now American kids cant wear an American flag on Mexican holiday celebrated in America. Until California is sold, bought or forcibly taken bythe mexican governmaen our kids should be able to wear an american flag any fin time they want….Hell you can wear an american flag at a christmas celebration. Do people of mexican decent think cinco de mayo is more reverent than christ………

So let me get this straight: too many Mexicans (although, in all fairness, arguably not the majority of them) sneak into this country ILLEGALLY, refuse–OUTRIGHT REFUSE–to pay taxes by taking legitimate job opportunities, menial jobs notwithstanding, away from American citizens-including the Mexican-American citizens-and working for tax-free dollars that some of them can’t even read; make baby after baby after baby like they’re free in order to help with their immigration status and get benefits (while we have no idea what kind of impact that has had on our economy); and then a couple of kids exercise their RIGHTS AS AMERICAN CITIZENS to free speech and somehow THEY did something wrong?!

How many kids should have been suspended on cinco de mayo 2002, when EVERYONE was displaying Old Glory after the terror attacks? Those kids were not the first to wear the American flag on May 5th–what makes it wrong to do so now? Because we KNOW that illegal immigration is running rampant now more than any other time in recent history and the problem has gone beyond our control to the point where we have to be bending more of our own rules to accomodate them… and in the bending, losing a little more of our own identity!

Those kids weren’t wearing the swastika-the display of which has come to be widely regarded as a threatening and menacing act–a hate crime in itself. They were just wearing the American flag. The same flag we grew up pledging our allegiance to in school. As some of the above posts have noted, soldiers blood is adding to the red in that flag in order to promote our freedom to display it. Did those American kids wear their shirts in defiance? DOESN’T MATTER! Sure the offended students said they wouldn’t wear their flag on July 4th, but first of all, they don’t speak for all Mexicans. There are some out there who ABSOLUTELY WOULD wear their colors on that day. Second of all, the only difference is that they would be FREE to! How can we not be free to display our flag in our own country? If the school is right, then that means they need to suspend every student who wears a Mexican flag on 4th of July, or a crucifix on Hannukah, or a Star of David on Christmas, or a… where does it end?
