Burke Back In Court After Returning To Radio

October 13th, 2009 by

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Radio talk show host Shannon Burke was back in court Monday, two days after his return to radio, asking a judge for more time on his violation of probation case.
Eyewitness News reporter Steve Barrett asked Burke during a one-on-one interview (watch interview) if he thinks he can salvage his career in radio after shooting his wife in the head. Burke told Barrett that he wants his new, paid radio program to help with his own recovery.
“To get through this dark point in my life. I’m humbled by all of this and right now it’s important to my sobriety to help other people who are suffering from alcohol abuse and addiction. It helps me keep sober and it’s something I’m called to do,” he said.
Burke was arrested earlier this year. Deputies say he shot his wife’s dog during a drunken dispute and the bullet hit his wife in the head. At the time, Burke was on probation for DUI.
Monday’s hearing concerned those charges, but Burke’s attorney asked for a continuance as he tries to work a deal with prosecutors on all the charges spanning two counties.
There are a number of local radio hosts who have gone from legal troubles back to the microphone. WHTQ’s Bubba the Love Sponge had his own troubles with animal abuse allegations. Hillsborough County prosecutors failed to make animal cruelty charges stick after a pig was killed in a radio station parking lot during a radio bit in Tampa.
Jayde Sweet of XL1067 was fired several years ago over a radio stunt where a woman died of water intoxication.
Burke says his goal is to make a comeback.
“Oh yeah, that’s the goal. Like I said, I’ve got to get through this part and then we’ll move on from there,” he said.
Burke is buying time on 660-AM WORL for his new show on substance abuse.
The judge gave Burke’s attorney until December 14 to get a deal worked out with prosecutors, otherwise it proceeds. The next hearing is a status hearing on December 4 to find out if there is a deal.
