Brawl Breaks Out on College Campus in Florida, Dozens Evacuated

DAYTONA BEACH - Five people were treated for minor injuries Tuesday and a student was arrested after a brawl on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University.

Almost 150 students were evacuated from a dormitory on the campus of the historically black university after a sprinkler was accidentally set off by someone who had hung clothes from it, said Daytona Beach Police spokesman Jimmie Flynt.

The disturbance started when students tried to return to the dorm but were prevented because of safety concerns, he said.

A dorm window was broken, causing $1,000 in damages, Flynt said.

“It was a small pocket of individuals who were causing the problems,” Flynt said. “Several fights broke out.”

A Bethune-Cookman student, Curtis Fluker, was charged with criminal mischief for throwing the chair through the window, Flynt said.

It wasn’t known if Fluker had hired an attorney. An online search of inmates at the Volusia County Jail didn’t turn up his name.

University staff attempted to calm down and disperse the students, said Liz Poston, a Bethune-Cookman spokeswoman.

“We’re conducting our own internal investigation to find out exactly what happened in terms of anything that may have triggered any of the student action,” Poston said.
