Beaten prostitutes woke in pools of blood, police say

DELRAY BEACH - Dane White picked up prostitutes from street corners in Broward and Palm Beach counties, police said, negotiated a price but then wouldn’t pay. Instead, police say, he allegedly beat them to the point of unconsciousness, breaking teeth and facial bones.

He did it all because of unrequited love, police said.

White broke up six months ago with his girlfriend of about four years and told police that propelled him to start picking up prostitutes and pummeling them with his fists. He’d beat and choke them so badly, police said, that they could not speak for days because of facial swelling and broken teeth.

“He simply beat them unconscious and repeatedly beat them and left them for dead,” Delray Beach Police Detective Gene Sapino said.

Police on Wednesday called the “broken heart” excuse nonsense.

“He’s a predator,” Sapino said. “They’d wake up in a pool of blood.”

Besides, attacks in Broward County started well before the breakup, in October 2008, Broward Sheriff’s Office Detective Eric Hendel said.

White, 28, is responsible for attacking at least 13 women between Broward and Palm Beach counties, several police agencies said at a news conference Wednesday. Only Delray Beach police have charged him so far, though other charges are pending, investigators said.

He was arrested Tuesday on an aggravated battery charge while on his way to work as a security guard in a Riviera Beach complex, Sapino said. Police found him by linking the license plate of a car he used during an attack to his west of Boynton Beach home, where he still lived with his girlfriend. It was one of several cars he drove during the attacks.

Delray Beach detectives did surveillance on the home and found it matched the description given by a victim who was brought there. White matched the description, too.

“He loved [his girlfriend] and could not harm her so he took it out on the other people,” Sapino said, adding that White confessed to the crimes.

Delray Beach’s first case was in June. Police said, the manager of a Budget Inn in the 2500 block of North Federal Highway called 911 when a woman with a bloody face and missing teeth showed up, banging on the window.

She told police she was a prostitute and met White in the 100 block of Southwest Ninth Avenue. The two went to a parking lot on the 2600 block of Webb Avenue, where White demanded the woman take off her pants. She refused and he beat and choked her. She recalled a storm of punches and kicks to the face. She retreated underneath a truck and White eventually left.

He was charged in that case, investigators said.

“He said he’s remorseful,” Hendel said. “He spoke somewhat matter of factly with a slight inflection of remorse in his voice, but no tears.”

White is being held in Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail. Police are looking for additional victims to come forward. They do not need to be concerned about any criminal charges for prostitution, investigators said.

Police ask anyone with information to call Detective Gene Sapino, 561-243-7828, or Crime Stoppers, 800-458-8477.
