January 26th, 2010 by

WTSP – Polk County Sheriff’s Computer Crimes and Special Victims detectives arrested a Bartow man last week for possession of child pornography and added additional charges against him after investigation revealed he sexually battered a four-year-old girl while creating child pornography images during the molestation.

Daryl James McClelland, DOB 3/31/54 (55 years old), who lives in a mobile trailer at 3489 US Hwy 17 North in Bartow, was arrested on January 22, 2010, and charged with 60 counts Possession of Child Pornography and 1 count Accessing a Computer Without Authority, after a search warrant was served and the resulting search revealed McClelland possessed multiple images of child pornography. As detectives continued their investigation to identify the victims portrayed in the images, they positively identified one of the victims – a four-year-old girl who had been left in McClelland’s care, babysitting, while the mother worked.

Detectives determined that McClelland sexually abused the victim a number of times in 2008 and 2009, and that he created the child pornography using her image. Detectives then interviewed McClelland, who admitted to sexually abusing the victim during the time he was babysitting.

Detectives added on charges against McClelland of 8 counts Sexual Battery on a Victim Under 12 Years of Age; 5 counts Lewd Molestation; and 1 count Battery on a Child by Contact with Bodily Fluids. McClelland remains in the Polk County Jail under no bond. He now faces 75 total charges.

The Sheriff’s Office will not release any information that will identify the victim.

Sheriff Judd will discuss the case at 3:30 p.m. today at the Bartow Sheriff’s Operations Center (Lawrence W. Crow, Jr. Center). The redacted arrest affidavit will be available at 3:30 p.m. Additional information will be released at that time.
