The New York Times reports that in 2003, AT&T led the way on a collection capability that the NSA said amounted to its “live” presence on the internet.

The report says in the first months of the new capability, it forwarded 400 billion internet records. AT&T’s cooperation has also allegedly involved a broad range of classified activities, like help with spying on internet communications at the United Nations.
