AP: Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dies
Associated Press: 80-Year-Old Dies After Suffering ‘Massive’ Heart Attack
NEW YORK (CBS) â€• Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning after suffering a “massive” heart attack, according to the Associated Press.
He had previously been reported to be in “extremely critical” condition and had been rushed to a hospital in Tampa, Fla.
Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4 at his home in Tampa, according to a press release issued last week by the Yankees.He said in the press release through his spokesman Howard J. Rubenstein:
“I want to thank everyone who has sent their good wishes. I am very fortunate to have the love and support of a great family and many, many friends. The Yankees and their fans are a large part of what keeps me going. It means a lot. And I remind everyone that the Fourth of July is also the birthday of our country. We are all lucky to be Americans.”
The Yankees have won several World Series trophies under Steinbrenner since he took ownership in 1973.
On his birthday, the team displayed all seven of those trophies, won in 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009.
