Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt untie the knot
IN A MOVE sure to boost the circulation of gossip mags, Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, after a dozen years together and two years of marriage.
Wild speculation will ensue. Here are a few headlines you’re likely to see that will have little resemblance to the truth:
“Brad’s back with Jen!”
“Angie still loves Billy Bob!”
“Maddox begs Brad to come home!”
“Is Clooney next?!”
“Kim: I won’t lose Kanye to Angelina!”
“Exclusive! The scary secret that doomed Brangelina’s marriage!”
Now that the future is out of the way, here are some of the pertinent details.
Angelina, 41, cited “irreconcilable difference” in divorce papers filed Monday in Los Angeles. She is seeking physical custody of their six children, with visitation rights for Brad.
Angie’s attorney, Robert Offer, cryptically said Tuesday that her decision to divorce was made “for the health of the family.” The filing dated the couple’s separation to last Thursday.
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time,” Brad said in a statement to People.
Though a couple since they starred together in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Brad and Angie wed in August 2014 at their French chateau with their children (15-year-old Maddox, 12-year-old Pax, 11-year-old Zahara, 10-year-old Shiloh, and 8-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne) serving as ring bearers and throwing flower petals.
It was the second marriage for Pitt, 52, who previously wed Jennifer Aniston. It was the third for Jolie Pitt, who was previously married to Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.
This high-profile marriage was both domestic and globe-trotting. The pair adopted children from Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia. In 2006, they formed the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, to which they funneled many of the millions they made selling personal pictures to celebrity magazines.
Their charity work fed off each other. Angelina became special envoy for the United Nations in 2012 and an outspoken voice for refugees, as well as for breast cancer treatment after undergoing a double mastectomy herself. Pitt built homes in New Orleans for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
His company, Plan B, produced high-profile films like 12 Years a Slave and The Big Short. She started directing films (Unbroken). Her most recent was By the Sea, in which she and Brad played a glamorous couple whose marriage was on the rocks.
The film flopped and, it turns out, so did the marriage.
The pair was last seen publicly together in July, when they were spotted taking their twins to breakfast in L.A.
* In Touch “exclusively” reported that Brad would ask for joint physical custody of the Brangelina Six.
“Their children will always be their chief priority,” an unnamed friend told In Touch. “They will keep up a happy-mom-and-dad facade for those kids.”
* In Touch also reported that their final fight was over Brad taking a trip.
“Brad’s leaving for the Adriatic coast [in early September] prompted a fight with his wife that has sealed the fate of their marriage,” an unnamed friend – most likely the same unnamed friend as in the previous item – told In Touch.
Angelina wanted him to spend the final days of summer with the family at their estate in France.
“As Brad headed out the door, Angelina was in tears,” said the gossipy friend.
It didn’t help that Angie was already peeved about Brad’s sexy scenes with French actress Marion Cotillard in the upcoming thriller
“When they argued over Marion the last time, Brad lashed back at Angelina, telling her he was done with her insecurities and fits of jealousy. He said she was suffocating him,” said the friend, who is so close he/she hears the couple’s conversations.
The magazine says the divorce will divide about $400 million in assets. No word yet if there was a pre-nup.
* The New York Post’s “Page Six” reported that a private eye Angie hired proved Pitt and Cotillard were having an affair, and a source said Pitt was having an “insane midlife crisis.”
There’s also something to do with Russian hookers.
* The Tattle Crystal Ball says that Angelina will eventually pair off with a wealthy philanthropist do-gooder and Brad will find fleeting happiness with an avant-garde artist. At some point they may attempt to reconcile.
For the children.
