Alleged Anthony Affair Reveals Intensity Of Case

ORLANDO, Fla. – The controversy surrounding George Anthony’s alleged affair revealed something much deeper about the case against Casey Anthony on Tuesday.
George Anthony reportedly said Caylee Anthony’s death was an accident.
Two former prosecutors said the scrutiny over George Anthony’s alleged statements shows detectives are searching far and wide to see if he may know more than he has said under oath.
Brad Conway, who is George Anthony’s attorney, had denied that his client had an affair, and he denied his client has any knowledge of how Caylee Anthony died.
But two former prosecutors have said the crucial question is not whether George Anthony had an affair but whether he knows more about Caylee Anthony’s death than he has revealed in sworn statements.
River Cruz, the woman who claimed she had an affair with George Anthony, also insisted that investigators came to her to ask about the Anthony case.
“This has nothing to do about money. That is ridiculous. I didn’t come to anybody. They came knocking on my door,” Cruz said.
“Their motives need to be questioned,” Conway said.
George Anthony’s attorney was quick to deny the allegations of an affair and condemned Cruz — but not the detectives who questioned her.
“They’re thorough. They’re serious about this, and they’re going to interview and take statements from anybody that has information relevant to the death of Caylee Anthony,” Conway said.
Authorities are also intent on determining whether George Anthony really said his granddaughter’s death was an accident, and whether he knows more about Caylee’s death than he’s told them under oath.
“Testimonial evidence is going to make or break the case,” Former Prosecutor Tom Luka said.
Luka was Lee Anthony’s attorney. Luka said any inconsistencies in George Anthony’s statement could damage the state’s case, and possibly benefit the defense by creating doubt.
“They need to make sure every witness is vetted to the utmost ability. Then nothing is a surprise when it comes down to the trial,” Luka said.
Another former prosecutor, Jeff Dean, said detectives want to cast a wide net at this point for information like this, and if necessary, confront witnesses like George Anthony with their findings.
If George Anthony were to decide to change his story in favor of Casey Anthony, he could then be reminded that he could face serious consequences.
