CHARLOTTE COUNTY (NBC 2): A 70-year-old man is accused of stalking a 16-year-old girl he met at church. The man is accused of repeatedly phoning and texting the teen.

“What were his intentions? Him being 70, and she’s 16?” said Robert Carpenter of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

It started with an encounter at church. That’s where deputies say 70-year old Joseph Medico met his alleged obsession. She was a volunteer.

“They were packing up clothing to go to the homeless coalition,” said Carpenter.

Deputies say Medico followed the young girl out to her car.

In the church parking lot, he asked her to go out to dinner, then back to his house, according to deputies.

“Obviously he was trying to hook up with this sixteen year old girl,” said Carpenter.

According to the victim, Medico just wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“He would call her on a cell phone three times in one day,” said Carpenter.

Detectives said Medico called repeatedly and sent several text messages to the girl.

When he wouldn’t stop, she called deputies. Medico was arrested and charged with stalking.

We spoke with neighbors who declined to go on camera, but say Medico is a very strange man. They were not surprised to hear of the allegations.

Medico posted bond but was not home when we tried to talk to him.
