3-year-old shot in leg while playing in backyard
COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Deputies in Colleton County are still trying to figure out how a 3-year-old boy was shot over the weekend.
Deputies were called to Colleton Regional Hospital’s emergency room in reference to a 3-year-old that was brought in by his father with an apparent gunshot wound to his left leg Saturday night.
The child’s father told authorities he was inside his home on Coot Lane near Walterboro. His son, along with some other children were playing in the backyard on the trampoline when the father heard a couple of gun shots. When he got to the back door, he saw that his 3-year-old son walking up the back steps, bleeding from his leg. He then took his son to the emergency room.
Hospital officials told deputies that the child had at least one gunshot would to his left knee and maybe another grazing wound in the same area.
The child was stabilized at the hospital in Colleton County, but was later transferred to a trauma facility in the Charleston area, where he is listed in stable condition.
Residents who live in the trailer park were surprised and concerned when they heard what happened.
“I think it’s getting terrible around here, little three year old boy getting shot,” said a man who called himself “Ghost.”
“You got to be careful around here now,” said John Black, who recently moved into the mobile home park.
An investigator with the Sheriff’s Office and a social worker with the state’s Department of Social Service also responded to the emergency room.
However a DSS spokeswoman said Monday afternoon the agency does not have custody of the child.
It is unclear at this time where the shots were fired from. Deputies are continuing their investigation.
