3-Year-Old Girl Killed in Alleged Carjacking

HOUSTON (www.myfoxhouston.com)- Police say custom rims on a Pontiac Grand Prix might have motivated a man to carjack a family at a northeast Houston apartment complex.

Investigators say the carjacking attempt took place after 1p.m. on Sunday at the Live Oak Bend Apartments on Greens Parkway.

Instead of driving away in the stolen car, investigators say the suspect shot out the back window and at least one child with an assault rifle.

“He (the car owner) said he was confused at first, thought it was a joke. The suspect demanded the keys. He had already put the keys in the ignition and before he could explain that, he said, ‘let me get my family out of the car,’ and he said the guy started shooting,” said Sgt. John Roberts with the Houston Police Department Homicide division.

Investigators say the man’s 3-year-old daughter, who a family member identifies as Theresa Powell, was shot and killed. Her one-year-old brother was also injured, though his condition is not known.

“She played with my kids. I got kids too, so it’s really eating me up inside. That’s a child. It’s not right, it’s not right,” said Carmella Williams, the victim’s cousin.

When the suspect escaped from the scene, so did the family looking for help.

“The baby was already limp, looked like the baby was already dead when they left,” said one witness.

The family drove to Beltway 8 near Greens Bayou and stopped in the middle of the feeder road where they flagged down police who called emergency crews.

“It’s a pretty brutal crime, pretty ugly,” said Roberts. The girl was transported to Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The baby boy was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with unspecified injuries.

Family members and friends who heard the news were saddened and outraged at the same time because this all happened, it appears, over a car.

“It’s crazy how the next day she’s gone. It’s all because somebody wanted to jack somebody’s car. It’s stupid,” said family friend Andrea Howard.

Police say the biggest challenge in solving this case will be finding witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-8477 (TIPS).
