Sarasota woman facing fraud, unlicensed medical profession charges

(BTLS Staff) SARASOTA, Fla. – A 30-year-old Sarasota woman is facing fraud charges following her arrest for working as an unlicensed health care professional.

Kristina Marie Balen was booked into the Sarasota County Jail and released after posting a bond of $3,000.

According to a Sarasota Police Department report the investigation into the suspect’s activities began last month when management with Sarasota Arthritis discovered $1,800 worth of medication was missing.

SPD was assisted by investigators with the Florida Department of Health’s Unlicensed Activity Unit.

Investigators say Balen was employed by Sarasota Arthritis as a Registered Nurse even though she did not possess a valid RN’s license. Her duties with the company included rooming patients, gathering medical information and computer entry of such data.

The suspect’s charge of unlicensed practice of a health care profession, a third-degree felony, punishable by a fine of $1,000 and a minimum mandatory period of incarceration of one year.

Balen is also facing one count of criminal used of personal identification information, a third-degree felony.
