Sarasota Police seek help in locating driver who struck, killed man in wheelchair

Wright was hit just before 9 pm Tuesday night; he died from his injuries on Wednesday.

(BTLS Staff) SARASOTA, Fla. – Investigators with the Sarasota Police Department are seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver of a vehicle that fled a fatal hit-and-run crash Tuesday night.

Michael Wright, a 48-year-old homeless man, was propelling his wheelchair in the crosswalk of the intersection of 17th St. and U.S. 301 just before 9 pm when he was struck. He died from his injuries early Wednesday.

According to a SPD report the type of vehicle is not known and no witnesses have come forward at this point. Officers need assistance in bringing the driver to justice.

“Right now we have very little to go on,” explained Genevieve Judge, public information officer with the Sarasota Police Department. “We are hoping media coverage with spark someone’s memory – even the littlest detail.”
