Sarasota Police arrest man on sex trafficking charge

(BTLS Staff) SARASOTA – A 24-year-old Hillsborough County man is facing a variety of charges following his arrest by Sarasota Police for his involvement with a teenage girl.

Maurice Williams is being held on a bond of $59,000 in the Sarasota County Jail.

According to a SPD report detectives received information from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office about an advertisement from the website ‘BackPage’ offering sex from a 16-year-old female. The ad states the prostitution could occur only within the city limits of Sarasota.

On December 18th SPD’s Street Crimes Unit conducted an undercover operation targeting human trafficking of a minor. The juvenile was rescued and Williams was taken into custody.

He is facing one count of human trafficking, one count of procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution.

Williams is no stranger to law enforcement. He’s got an extensive arrest record in the Tampa Bay area for a variety of crimes including obstruction, drug possession and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

The teen was reported as a runaway out of Hillsborough County. She was taken into protective custody and was put in touch with counselors with SPD partners – TYLA – Turn Your Life Around.

Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues
