Dr. Sonnet Ehlers Distributes Anti-Rape Condom for World Cup

The 2010 World Cup is attracting fans from around the globe to South Africa: a country with high rates of HIV and AIDS and a country where 1 in 4 men admit to have committed rape. South African physician Dr. Sonnet Ehlers has come up with a protective measure for women attending the World Cup. She sold her car and home to distribute Rape-aXe, a female condom with teeth.

The Rape-aXe female condom is made of latex sheath with tiny, sharp barbs, worn as a tampon. If an attacker tries to force penetration, the device latches on and must be surgically removed. Its design also makes sure that blood will not flow from the perpetrator, nor can it be accidentally turned inside out to injure the woman.

Dr. Ehlers has received a good deal of criticism for her invention, from the argument that it tells women to feel vulnerable, to worries that the pain to the attacker may lead to violent retaliation.

“Regrettably, you are always at risk of being killed by your assailant, Rape-aXe will buy you time to get away … he will realize that he is tagged and he knows he will be in double trouble should he kill you.” (antirape.co.za)

Another worry is that women could use the device to seek revenge on unfaithful partners.

“My advice, don’t put what belongs to you where it does not belong and you will never run into trouble.” (time.com)

Dr. Sonnet Ehlers is distributing 30,000 free units of Rape-aXe in several South African cities for the World Cup. The device will then go on sale for $2 a piece.
