Whitten, 58, is the former VP of Fred's Excavating and Crane Services in Orlando.

(BTLS Staff) DAVENPORT, Fla. – A 58-year-old Haines City man is behind bars following his arrest late last week on attempted murder and kidnapping charges.

Frederick Eugene Whitten, 58, was booked into the Polk County Jail late Thursday. He is being held without bond.

According to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office report the suspect stalked a female jogger and pushed her off a roadway in Davenport with his pick-up truck. The report states Whitten jumped out of the truck and attacked the victim.

He sat on her legs and attempted to strike her in the head with a hammer.

The unidentified jogger fought back, got the hammer away from her attacker and continued to fight until another vehicle came by and called 9-1-1.

Investigators say Whitten choked the victim and attempted to push her into a nearby patch of tall grass to conceal his actions from passers-by.

“Had she not fought for her life, she would be dead today,” explained Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd during a Friday news conference on the case. “We are sure [Whitten] stalked her, that he followed her, that he bumped her off the road and took the hammer out to take control of her.”

The 43-year-old victim suffered a fractured left leg when Whitten struck her with his truck.

The suspect is facing one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of attempted kidnapping and one count of terrorizing a victim.

Detectives still want to talk to the person who called 9-1-1 and they are concerned the suspect may have attempted similar crimes before even though he has no prior criminal record.
