Polk deputies reach peaceful end to standoff near Lakeland

Polk deputies arrived at the scene at approximately 7:30 pm Monday.

(BTLS Staff) LAKELAND, Fla. – Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office reached a peaceful end to a standoff with a barricaded subject early Tuesday.

The unidentified man was holed up in a business in the 7300 block of US 98 North. At approximately 2:30 am he surrendered and was taken to a nearby hospital for an evaluation.

According to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office report the subject was despondent. The report states the first deputies arrived at the location just after 7:30 pm Monday.

The department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team was also dispatched as were scene the mobile command and aerial units.

Northbound US 98 was shutdown at Marcum and Duff roads until the standoff ended. Southbound lanes were routed onto Ritter Rd. The man was alone in the business according to investigators.
