(KOAT.COM) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Two people — a man and a woman — were hospitalized with gunshot wounds Saturday afternoon.

Police responded to America’s Best Value Inn on the 2100 block of Menaul Northeast, where the two were found.

Albuquerque police said a 3-year-old boy was able to remove a handgun from his mother’s purse and fire a round. The round hit his father in the buttocks and exited through his hip, and hit the mother’s right shoulder.

Police said the father was released from a local hospital. They said the mother, who is eight months pregnant, was in stable condition at a hospital.

The boy and his 2-year-old sister were placed on a 48-hour hold with the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department.
Police continue to investigate.

Anyone with information should call the Albuquerque Police Department.
