Oldsmar man charged with killing his mother on New Year’s Eve
(BTLS Staff) OLDSMAR, Fl. – A 23-year-old Bay area man is behind bars charged in the death of his mother.
Christian Jose Gomez is being held without bond at the Pinellas County Jail. He is facing one count of murder in the first degree.
According to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office report the suspect’s brother called 9-1-1 after finding the body of Maria Suarez-Cassagne at her home in the 1900 block of Sheffield Court in Oldsmar at approximately 7:30 pm Wednesday.
Mario Gomez told investigators that Christian Jose Gomez killed their mother and had ‘cut her head off.’ When deputies arrived the suspect had fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later following a short pursuit.
What led to the brutal homicide? Maria Suarez-Cassagne had simply wanted her son to complete some chores around the house.
“He [the suspect] was upset because his mother for the last couple of days had been trying to get him to put some boxes in the attic,” explained Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri during a Thursday news conference. “Because he was mad at her he planned her murder for two days.”
Authorities say Gomez admitted to the crime when questioned by detectives. The suspect suffers from schizophrenia and had been prescribed medication but it is unclear if he was taking the drugs at the time of the murder.
The murder weapon, an ax, was recovered at the scene. Gomez decapitated his mother, but her head in a trash can and attempted to but the rest of her body in the receptacle but was unsuccessful.
This is not the suspect’s first brush with law enforcement. He was arrested on loitering and prowling charges by PCSO deputies last March.
Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
