(WFLA.COM) CLEARWATER, Fla. – A Pinellas County judge denied bond on Thursday for a man accused of throwing his 5-year-old daughter to her death off a St. Pete bridge early Thursday morning.

John Jonchuck, 25, of Tampa is charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle of a law enforcement officer and aggravated fleeing and eluding an officer in connection with the death of his daughter, Phoebe Jonchuck.

Jonchuck appeared dazed during the court appearance and entered in a bizarre and almost defiant exchange with the judge.

Judge- “You are John Jonchuck?”

John Jonchuck- “That’s the name I was given.”

Judge- “Can you hire your own lawyer?”

John Jonchuck- (no answer)

Judge- “Do you have the wherewithal to hire an attorney, sir?”

John Jonchuck- “No.”

Judge- “Would you like me to appoint an attorney to represent you?”

John Jonchuck- “No.”

Judge- “Are you sure?”

John Jonchuck- ”I want to leave it in the hands of God.”

Judge- “Okay, so you want to represent yourself?”

John Jonchuck- “I want to leave it in the hands of God.”

Judge- “I’m pretty sure God is not going to be representing you in this case and you’re going to be standing trial. Would you like someone standing next to you as you stand trial, an attorney?”

John Jonchuck- “Yes. Someone that is pure and good, not evil.”

Judge- “I’ll do the best I can to give you a pure and good lawyer.”

John Jonchuck- “I don’t want a court-appointed lawyer. I want to leave it in the hands of God.”

Judge- “Bring him back on Monday to see if he wants an attorney. Bond remains. Thank you, sir.”
