The Hawthorne Elementary teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

(KOAT.COM) ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – An Albuquerque Elementary School teacher is on paid leave after students claim he made disturbing comments in class.

Margie Brooks is taken aback by what her son said he heard from his fifth-grade teacher in class about a week ago.

“Shock, disbelief,” she said. “I made him explain it to me over and over, because I just couldn’t fathom a teacher discussing this with 11-year-olds.”

According to Brooks’ son, the Hawthorne Elementary teacher told the class he had raped his first wife.

KOAT Action 7 News is not reporting the teacher’s name because he is not charged with a crime.

Students reported the alleged comments to the office. The teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation takes place, according to Albuquerque Public Schools.

APS won’t reveal specifics, since it’s a personnel problem.

Brooks says she’s happy the district put the teacher on leave and is looking at what happened, but she says they should have acted sooner.

“The minute that allegation was made by these kids I would have done something about it,” said Brooks.

APS said the teacher has worked at several schools since August.
