Police responded to the apartment complex on Sunday.

(WCVB.COM) WAKEFIELD, Mass. – A man stabbed his wife to death before taking his own life at a Wakefield apartment building Sunday, according to police.

Police say Daniel Burns, 42, fatally stabbed his wife Christine Giordano before jumping to his death from the ninth floor of the apartment building.

Officers found Giordano suffering from stab wounds at the apartment building, according to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.

“They arrived and discovered a man who had come out of the ninth-floor window and discovered a woman who we believe was transported down to the lobby suffering from stab wounds,” Ryan said. “She did indicate her husband had stabbed her.”

Ryan said officers found Burns also had self-inflicted stab wounds.

Burns and Giordano had only been married for two years and had been separated, according to investigators. Burns had been staying at the Wakefield apartment with family, and Giordano had spent the night at the apartment in an effort to reconcile the relationship.

Ryan said Burns had prior restraining orders not involving Giordano.

Residents of the apartment building were still trying to process the details of the crime on Sunday afternoon.

“Tape was already in the hallway and they hadn’t begun taping the back yet,” said Dave Santos, a resident.
