Man who killed wife to pursue alternative sex lifestyle sentenced to life in jail
(WXYZ.COM) DETROIT, Michigan – Bob Bashara has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife Jane.
Judge Vonda Evans sentenced Bashara following statements by Bashara, who denied his guilt and vowed to appeal, and by Jane’s mother and sister.
Their statements followed a short, unexpected recess so that Bob could review his presentence report. Evans delayed the hearing because Bashara had just received the report Thursday morning.
The delay also came after Bashara placed two motions into the record. Evans denied the motions, but put them onto the record so they would be there as part of any possible appeals by Bashara.
Bob Bashara was found guilty of five different charges on Dec. 18.
Those charges include:
Homicide – Murder First Degree – Premeditated (Conspiracy)
Homicide – Solicitation of Murder (Solicit)
Homicide – Murder First Degree – Premeditated
Obstruction of Justice
Prosecutors claimed Bob hired a handyman to kill Jane in 2012 so he could pursue an alternative sex lifestyle with his mistress – something his defense team has denied.
The handyman who prosecutors say Bob hired, Joe Gentz, pleaded guilty to killing Jane in late 2012, saying Bob paid him to do so. However, Gentz refused to testify at the trial.
Bashara has been serving time in jail for trying to hire a hitman to kill Gentz, who was already behind bars at the time.
