Longtime Manatee school employee honored with scholarship, fish fry

Sylvia Wood worked at the school she attended for 35 years.

(BTLS Staff) PALMETTO, Fla. – A longtime Manatee County School District employee will be honored Thursday with the first annual Sylvia Wood Scholarship Fish Fry fundraiser.

The event will be held at Palmetto High School. Wood, who passed away at age 67 in February 2014, worked as the school’s bookkeeper for 35 years. Local business owner David Bailey will Fry the fish and Peach’s Restaurant will provide side dishes – baked beans, hush puppies and cole slaw.

Tickets for one dinner are only $10. All proceeds will benefit the Sylvia Wood Scholarship Fund, which will benefit students at the school.

Sylvia moved to Palmetto when she was just 11 years old. She attended PHS where she met her husband of 44 years, Sammy Wood.
They will begin dishing out the grub at 4:30 and will do so until around 7 pm. If interested in attending you can purchase tickets through the Palmetto High School Athletic Booster’s Club or you can pick them up at the front desk of the school.
