(BTLS Staff) LAKELAND, Fla. – Detectives with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office are collecting information in the death of a child pornography suspect.

David Wayne Cahill, 56, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office report deputies were dispatched to 6120 Andrea Dr. in Lakeland just after noon Sunday to execute a search warrant.

Investigators with the department’s Computer Crimes unit had received information that someone at that residence had been downloading and distributing files containing girls between the ages of 7-10 in varying stages of undress.

When deputies arrived they announced their presence and instructed all residents inside the home to come to the front door. When nobody replied to their commands deputies entered the home where they were confronted by Nell Cahill, the suspect’s wife.

Mrs. Cahill was reluctant to exit the residence and had to be escorted from the home. As they were doing so the sound of a single gunshot resonated from a back bedroom.

The suspect was located inside a closet in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest. A handgun was located nearby and emergency responders were called in to treat Cahill.

He was pronounced deceased a short time later.

In an office located near the master bedroom, investigators located dozens of portable thumb drives as well as several computers and other electronic devices.

Mrs. Cahill told detectives that her husband was in the office when deputies arrived. She told her husband that deputies were outside the home and demanded to come in.

Deputies learned the suspect kept the thumb drives, computers and electronic devices in the office and were used solely by him. A preliminary review turned up 12 pornographic images on Cahill’s main computer.

Approximately 330,000 files were also recovered from the same computer but those files have not yet been reviewed.

The investigation continues.
