Source: Mail Tribune — An 18-year-old homeless man faces rape, sodomy and child pornography charges after allegedly sending sexually explicit text messages to two girls at Scenic Middle School and engaging in sexual activity with one of them at her Medford home, investigators said.

Police are looking for other girls who might have had contact with the man, Benjamin George Mapes.

On Nov. 16, the Southern Oregon High”‘Tech Crimes Task Force received a report from a Scenic Middle School administrator about girls at the school receiving sexually explicit text messages and images from a man, Central Point police Sgt. Josh Moulin, commander of the task force, said in a news release. The task force’s investigation quickly identified the two girls, then identified the man who had sent the messages.

During the investigation one of the girls told a Medford police detective assisting with the case that she and Mapes had engaged in sexual activity at her home in Medford.

Police found Mapes at the Medford Gospel Mission on Sunday, and, after interviewing him, arrested him on third-degree rape, third-degree sodomy and using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct. He was lodged in Jackson County Jail.

The task force seized digital evidence in this case and plans to analyze it at the task force’s laboratory in Central Point.

On Tuesday, Mapes was indicted by a Jackson County grand jury. He remained in jail Wednesday on $500,000 bail.
