(BTLS Staff) ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A five-year-old girl is dead after a man threw her from a bridge along the southbound lanes of Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg early Thursday.

The name of the victim has not been released.

According to a St. Petersburg Police Department report the incident occurred on the Dick Misener Bridge just after midnight. The incident that led up to the child’s death began when a SPPD officer heading home observed a Chrysler PT Cruiser passed him going close to 100 miles per hour.

The officer turned on his lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop. When he reached the top of the Misener Bridge the officer observed the man stop the cruiser and toss the child into the water below.

The driver got back into the vehicle and continued south. He was eventually stopped by authorities in Manatee County approximately 30 minutes later near the University Parkway exit on Interstate 75 just south of Bradenton.

An immediate search for the child began closing the southbound lanes of I-275. The body of the little girl has been recovered as the United States Coast Guard and other Bay area agencies took part in the search.

The driver of the Cruiser is being questioned by MCSO.

No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
