Daughter of former WTSP anchor dies in Xmas Eve crash
(NY Daily News) COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. – A former Florida news anchor was not injured in a Christmas Eve car crash that took her daughter’s life and injured her husband, authorities said.
Marty Austin, known as Marty Matthews on WTSP 10 News in Tampa, Florida, made her way with her husband and her daughter to their son’s home in North Carolina Wednesday.
Driving through the rain, husband Edward Austin, 66, lost control of the vehicle, veered to the right and crashed into trees around 12:20 pm. on Interstate 95 in Colleton County, South Carolina, according to WTSP.
The couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Emily Austin, had been in the backseat and died at the scene from her injuries.
The driver, Edward, was injured and is in critical condition at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Marty Austin, sitting in the front passenger seat, was not injured.
All three were wearing seat belts, authorities said.
Marty Austin co-anchored the 4 pm. show at 10 News between 2002 and 2009, when her contract was not renewed. She had spent 15 years with the TV station and won awards for her segment on foster children in need of a home.
