Edosomwan, 53, is facing 16 counts of sexual battery.

(WSOCTV.COM) CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit have charged Dr. Fidelis Edosomwan, 53, for his involvement in additional sexual assault incidents.

He bonded out of jail Friday night and would not comment on his case.

Sexual assault detectives signed warrants Thursday morning for 16 counts of sexual battery and 16 counts of sex offense against Edosomwan.

Earlier Thursday afternoon, Edosomwan turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

During their investigation, detectives said they identified 31 victims. There are also eight additional cases that were identified as being outside the statute of limitations.

After police began urging more potential victims to come forward last month, they expected it would be difficult for many women to face something so very personal.

But that’s exactly what happened.

There are now 34 women who accuse Edosomwan of sex assaults, ranging in age from their 20s to their 40s.

Police said all of the incidents happened at one of Edosomwan’s offices in Charlotte.

Eight older cases go back to the mid-2000s and were beyond the statute of limitations for a misdemeanor charge.

Investigators said Friday that seeing the first two women come forward about such a sensitive crime encouraged others to do the same.

“I would imagine it was just so personal to some that maybe they doubted themselves, at the time, until other victims come forward, and they see that they weren’t the only one,” said CMPD Lt. Melanie Peacock.

Edosmwan has voluntarily signed over his medical license in a non-practicing agreement, so he is no longer practicing.

This remains an ongoing investigation.

Detectives continue to encourage anyone with additional information concerning these cases or the suspect to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
