Central Fla. police officer charged with sex crime involving a child

(BTLS Staff) LAKELAND, Fla. – A Central Florida law enforcement officer is behind bars facing sex charges.

Joshua David Smith, a 32-year-old member of the Oakland Police Department, was arrested Wednesday by deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a PCSO report Smith is facing one count of promoting the sexual performance of a child – a second-degree felony. He was booked into the Polk County Jail where he is being held without bond.

The suspect lives in Polk County. Investigators say the victim in the case is a three-year-old girl he had access to.

Oakland is a small town west of Orlando in Orange County. It has a population of 2,500 and it’s police department employs 10 full-time officers and six reserve police officers.
