California man sets self on fire in Starbucks bathroom

The incident occurred just after 8 am Tuesday.


(ABC 7 Los Angeles) LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A man is in critical condition after setting himself on fire in a Starbucks bathroom in Van Nuys on Tuesday.

Authorities say a man in his 60s entered the bathroom at Starbucks in the 15000 block of West Sherman Way just after 8 am. Moments later, bystanders heard an explosive sound, and the man staggered out of the bathroom engulfed in flames. 

As he collapsed near the front entrance, people at the Starbucks helped put the flames out.

“Even though this was a very traumatic situation for them, we are glad that they did step up and try to do something to assist this person,” said David Ortiz of Los Angeles City Fire Department.

The man was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, with burns covering 90 percent of his body.

Employees gathered outside the Starbucks, where they were interviewed by investigators.

Authorities have no released what type of accelerants the man may have used to start the fire.
