(BTLS Staff) TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the fight against childhood cancer on Tuesday.

More than two dozen players, coaches and staff members took part in the Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge with proceeds going to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Fans also showed up to have their heads shaved at the event to raise money and awareness in the continuing effort to eliminate the horrible disease.

Among the Buccaneers who took part Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford, quarterback Jameis Winston, linebacker Lavonte David, offensive linemen Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

Tuesday marked the third consecutive year the Bucs have participated in the Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge.

Through donations from the Buccaneers organization, as well as players, staff, and fans, over $30,000 was raised for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. They more than doubled their goal of $15,000.

All-Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy made a personal donation of $10,000.

“It’s something that’s close to our hearts: kids,” McCoy explained. “The fighting on the field can’t compare to fighting for your life, because they have a toughness that us as professional athletes – the toughest guys in the world – I can’t honestly say that we have the toughness that they have. They are the real heroes.”

Along with participation from Buccaneers players and staff members, this year’s event also included a selection of Buccaneers fans that had raised the most money towards the team’s fund-raising cause.

Those fans were invited to the popular head-shaving event at One Buc Place, where they had the chance to watch the participating Buccaneers players and staff shave their heads, as well as have the chance to get their heads shaved.

Tuesday’s event wrapped up a campaign that began on March 1, 2015, where
professional athletes and more than 200 men, women, and children throughout Tampa Bay shaved their heads to raise funds for childhood cancer research.

This year alone, the campaign has raised over $400,000 that will go towards providing medical research, programming and pediatric care for children and their families fighting pediatric cancer and blood disorders.

“Pediatric cancer better watch out, because we’re moving the needle,” said Nancy Crane, executive director of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. “We’re moving the needle, we’re finding new therapies for kids, and we’re doing it right here in Tampa Bay.”
