Arizona man drinks gin, falls asleep – son dies in hot car
(KPHO.COM) PHOENIX, Ariz. – A Phoenix father who said he drank a bottle of gin while driving with his two sons instead of taking them to get haircuts was arrested after the lifeless body of one of his sons was found in the family car outside their house Monday afternoon.
Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said 41-year-old James Koryor was arrested and booked into jail Tuesday morning on suspicion of manslaughter and child abuse in connection with the death of his unidentified 2 1/2-year-old son.
Crump said Koryor was supposed to take his two sons to get haircuts about 1 pm. Monday, but instead went to a liquor store, where he bought and then drank the bottle of gin with the boys in the car.
Witnesses told officers that Koryor was seen drinking beer before he left and that he “returned about an hour and a half later, went in and went to sleep,” Crump said.
The 5-year-old son was able to get out on his own, but the 2 1/2-year-old remained in the car while the remaining family members thought he was asleep inside the home, Crump said.
“Other family members in the house believed that (Koryor) had gotten both the children out of the car,” Crump said. “They had seen the 5-year-old running around the house while they were doing other things and asked where his brother was, to which everybody believed he was sleeping.”
Police estimated the child was left in the car at least two hours.
