Tampa, Florida -
Anthony Lowery never thought his sermon would have an audience of more than a million people.

He dreamed about it. He even prayed for it, that his message would reach as many people as possible. He never thought that by getting arrested, God’s will would be done.

“I’m just a vessel,” Anthony told us. “Being used by God. It’s not about me. it’s about all those lost souls out there.”

Anthony admits he, himself, was once a lost soul until he became a Christian and began preaching the Gospel.

His favorite spot to deliver his message is the corner of Memorial and Martin Luther King in Lakeland. He stands with speakers and a microphone spreading the word to anyone who will listen.

And generally, the response has been good.

That is, until May 4th. That day, he was arrested while preaching. Police say he violated a noise ordinance. The pastor was handcuffed and thrown into jail.

But he isn’t angry. He says he’s actually praying for the same police department that arrested him.

“God says to forgive. He is speaking to my heart,” Lowery says.

After preaching on that same street corner for nine years, Pastor Lowery says he’s in awe with what happened next. He calls it a miracle that Bubba the Love Sponge® heard his story.

The wildly popular syndicated radio host, with more than a million listeners each day, heard what happened to Lowery and immediately offered the pastor 30 minutes of uninterrupted air time on his show.

With a smile, Bubba told 10 Connects,”If there’s anyone who values the First Amendment, and has been screwed with based on standing behind it, it’s me. I saw this, and thought it was absurd. There’s a lot of people doing a lot of things on street corners… I think this guy got railroaded.”

So for 30 minutes on Tuesday morning, Pastor Lowery took the microphone and began preaching. He even took a phone call or two.

When all was said and done, the preacher couldn’t stop grinning. He loved the experience and what he calls, “the amazing kindness.”

Lowery says, “He made me laugh. I couldn’t stop laughing. That’s when I loosened up… I haven’t laughed like that in a long time.”

“I wanted to give this guy an opportunity to be heard on a larger venue than he’s ever had before,” Bubba told us. “Certainly, he’s not saying anything that’s not a positive message.”

He added, “We could all use a little more spirituality.”

The Lakeland Police Chief, Roger Boatner, seems to agree. After the appearance on Bubba the Love Sponge®, Lowery drove back to Polk County and met with Chief Boatner in Lakeland to discuss what happened with the arrest.

The pastor was pleasantly surprised with what came of the meeting. Lowery says the chief was “very nice.”

The Chief told Lowery that he’d like to see the preacher deliver sermons in Lakeland’s worst crime-ridden areas, to assist the department in bringing a positive message to citizens.

The pastor says he’s blessed to help in any way he can. “I’m just a vessel… being used by God.. it’s not about me. It’s about all those lost souls out there.”

The Bubba the Love Sponge® show airs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on 102.5 “The Bone.” It’s based in Tampa, but the show airs nationwide on SiriusXM Satellite Radio (Channel 101).
